其基本特征是在廢氣處理構筑物內設置微生物生長聚集的載體，在充氧的條件下，微生物在填料表面積聚附著形成生物膜。當廢氣經過時，生物膜中的微生物吸收分解廢氣中的有機物，使廢氣得到凈化，同時微生物也得到增殖，生物膜隨之增厚。當生物膜增長到一定厚度，向生物膜內部擴散的氧受到限制，其表面仍是好氧狀態(tài)，而內層則會呈缺氧甚至厭氧狀態(tài)，并zui終導致生物膜的脫落。隨后，填料表面還會繼續(xù)生長新的生物膜，周而復女厶口，使廢氣得到凈化。

工作原理
在生物塔反應器內設置填料，廢氣經過充氧（或在生物塔底部鼓風曝氣）后與填料相接觸，在填料表面生物膜和填料空隙間的活性污泥雙重作用下，使廢氣得到凈化。生物塔內裝有填料，大部分微生物以生物膜的形式固著生長于填料表面，少部分則以活性污泥的形式懸浮生長于水中。因此，生物塔兼有活性污泥法與生物過濾特性，是一種以生物膜法作用為主、兼有活性污泥法作用的生物處理工藝。
結構構造
生物塔的塔體為方型臥式，無分段連接法蘭。具體結構由塔體、布水系統(tǒng)、曝氣裝置丶生物載體區(qū)、出水溢流堰等組成。
